Basic bike safety

Postby arhan » Wed Jan 25, 2017 8:53 pm

Hi,

I'd like to share basic bike safety tips for those who may be brand new to cycling outside of the city of Memphis' great parks and are interested in taking to the streets.

I thought to share my favorite beginner tip outside of making sure your bike is in good working order (we can talk about that another time).

The first step to becoming a safe cycle commuter is to be able to safely look over your shoulder while continuing to bike in a straight line. Inevitably, you will encounter obstacles in your lane that force you to merge into traffic, and you must check first that you have an opening. As you gain confidence, you may also want to turn left in traffic, and this skill comes into play. Looking over your shoulder while maintaining your original course is critical to sharing the road safely.

I could go on, but it would be great to start a conversation.
